My goal in creating the Hoffman Method was to build on my own piano teaching experience and integrate the most up-to-date research on learning theory and motivation to help anyone learn piano successfully.
The Hoffman Method is rooted in the philosophy that ALL students – including kids, teens, and adults of any age – can successfully and joyfully learn to play the piano, regardless of so-called “talent.” I believe that when you combine a sound teaching approach with consistent, focused practice, skill and ability will always blossom.
These are my core principles:
Ear before eye — Old-fashioned, traditional piano methods begin with learning to read music from a book, but this is backwards from how the brain is wired to learn! Children gain fluency in their native language by first listening and imitating, and last of all by learning to read and write. Likewise, piano students benefit from following the same learning progression: listen, imitate, play songs by ear, and then learn to read and write music notation.
Singing — The Hoffman Method incorporates singing and solfege (do, re, mi, etc) as a powerful tool to accelerate musical learning. Singing is one of the fastest ways to develop a keen musical ear and a strong rhythmic pulse, essential skills for any musician.
Transposition — The Hoffman Method trains students to transpose their pieces into each new key that they learn. Transposition strengthens a student’s ability to play by ear and to understand the relationships of sounds within a musical scale.
Sight Reading - Early in the Hoffman Method, students acquire a solid foundation in music notation basics, including the musical alphabet (forwards, backwards, and in skips), lines and spaces, clefs, counting rhythms, and learning to recognize when notes move by step, skip, or repeat. From this foundation, students begin building the important skill of sight reading unfamiliar music using our Sight Reading Trainer Books, starting in Unit 3.
Memory — The Hoffman Method enables students to memorize their songs as quickly as possible so they can focus on musical expression and be able to perform anywhere, any time, even if they don't have their sheet music with them.
Improvisation — Improvisation promotes musical exploration and discovery, and leads to developing composition skills. It’s also a lot of fun!
And of course, technology — The Hoffman Method includes online music learning games to help students drill and master music theory concepts and staff reading skills. The games themselves are carefully designed to offer just enough challenge in each level to encourage motivation. We also have guided online practice sessions to help piano students make the most of their practice time every day.
